Wounded in action, 21 September 1916; admitted to No 4 London Field Ambulance, 22 September 1916; rejoined Bn, 29 September 1916. Admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance, 30 January 1917 (hand); transferred to No 2 Casualty Clearing Station; 4 February 1917; to No 2 Australian General Hospital, Wimereux, 14 February 1917; to No 1 Convalescent Depot, Boulogne, 17 February 1917; to Base Depot, Etaples, 8 March 1917. Tried by Field General Court Martial, Etaples, 11 June 1917, on charge of when on Active Service deserting: when under order to train to the front absented himself without leave from 10.30 am, 29 May, to 8.30 pm, 30 May 1917, with intent to avoid Active Service at the front: awarded 2 years' imprisonment with hard labour.
