Embarked Port Said to join the British Expeditionary Force, France, 13 April 1916; joined 2nd Bn, Auckland Infantry Regiment, in the field, 18 May 1916. Posted to No 2 Company, NZ Machine Gun Corps, 15 July 1916. Reported missing, believed wounded, 21 September 1916; admitted to Field Ambulance, 21 September 1916 (gun shot wound, left thigh); transferred to 13th Casualty Clearing Station, 22 September 1916; to 12th General Hospital, Rouen, 24 September 1916; to England, 25 September 1916, and admitted to NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, 27 September 1916. Attached to Machine Gun Depot, Grantham, 13 January 1917. Found guilty, 7 February 1917, of (1) using abusive language to an NCO, and (2) refusing to give his name to an NCO, 4 February 1917: awarded 7 days' detention.
