Transferred from Otago Mounted Rifles Regiment to New Zealand Pioneer Battalion, Ismailia, 14 March 1916. Embarked for France on board HMT 'Canada', Port Said, 9 April 1916.

Disembarked Marseilles, France, and entrained with unit for Flanders, 14 April 1916.

Wounded in action and admitted to 15th Corps Medical Dressing Station, transferred to 36th Casualty Clearing Station then transferred to Ambulance Train (gunshot wound, back and chest), 16 September 1916; admitted to No 12 General Hospital, Rouen, 18 September 1916; transferred to HMHS 'Aberdonian' and evacuated to England, 28 September 1916; arrived England and admitted to 3rd Southern General Hospital, Oxford, 30 September 1916; transferred to No 1 New Zealand General Hospital, Brockenhurst, 6 December 1916; transferred to New Zealand Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 23 January 1917.
