Military Medal 'Operations: British Front before Puisieux 16th August 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. At 5.15am on the morning of 16th August, a party of 15 Germans, with two machine guns, attempted to enter our trench. When close enough one of them threw a bomb wounded Corporal McCauley in the leg. This NCO, regardless of his wound and at great personal risk, with one comrade brought rapid fire to bear on the enemy. By his initiative and heroism at this critical moment he held the enemy at bay till assistance arrived. The capture of 1 Officer, 6 other ranks and 1 machine gun was due, in a large measure, to the gallant conduct of Corporal McCauley.'
