Medals

Croix de Guerre (Belgium)

'Operations: British front east of Hebuterne: August 14/16th 1918. For gallantry and devotion to duty. During the operations on Serre Ridge Captain Lumley was in command of a light Trench Mortar Battery and was for the time being without other officers in the Battery. He personally led his battery into action and kept in constant touch with the attacking infantry. On the Infantry being held up by heavy hostile machine gun fire, he directed the fire of two of his gun teams on to the machine gun nests and thus enabled the advance of the Infantry to proceed. During the period of consolidation Captain Lumley personally reconnoitred for all his gun positions and immediately registered on S.O.S. lines. The operations were carried out under heavy shell fire and machine-gun fire. Captain Lumley by his keen foresight, tireless energy and gallant conduct greatly contributed towards the success of the operations and set an inspiring example to all.'
