'For conspicuous gallantry in the field. East of St Julien on the 4th October 1917 his section became detached from the rest of the platoon but he led it with great skill to the objective and organised the consolidation of that part of the line. Subsequently he took charge of the platoon and did splendid work in that capacity reorganising the platoon and handling it in a most efficient manner. His conduct throughout was splendid and by his coolness disregard of personal safety and prompt actions he inspired confidence in all his men.'
