Military Medal 'During the attack on the Gravenstafel Ridge position on 4th October Cpl Leary was senior NCO of the Wireless Detachment. At zero he proceeded with the forward party of the 4th New Zealand Infantry Brigade and set up the Amplifier,
repairing the earth leads as they were broken by shell fire. As soon as this station was in good working order, he proceeded to the 1st New Zealand Infantry Brigade forward station, under fire, and made sure that set was in good working order. He
displayed great coolness and did very valuable work. Previous to zero he worked indefatigably in setting up the wireless and amplifier sets behind our lines, and in organizing the chain of communications.'
