War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington, 16 October 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 29 December 1916, and marched in to Sling Camp, and taken on strength, 3rd Bn, Auckland Infantry Regiment. Proceeded overseas to France, 28 May 1917. Detached for duty with Army Service Corps, 5 July 1917; rejoined 3rd Bn, in the field, 9 August 1917. Reported absent, 28 September 1917; rejoined Bn, 29 September 1917. Detached to No 4 Company, NZ Engineers, 29 September 1917; rejoined 3rd Bn, AIR, 20 October 1917. Detached to 4th Field Company Engineers, 13 November 1917. Wounded in action, 13 March 1918 (gassed: mustard shell), and admitted to No 19 Field Ambulance, and transferred same day to 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station; to 54th (London) General Hospital, 15 March 1918; to England, 26 March 1918, and admitted to Southwark Military Hospital, 27 March 1918. Transferred to No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, 11 April 1918. Classified unfit by Medical Board, 23 May 1918, and placed on NZ Roll.
