Embarked Wellington, 26 June 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 22 August 1916; marched into Sling Camp, 23 August 1916, and reverted to the ranks.

Appointed Temporary Corporal, 29 August 1916.

Proceeded overseas to France, 26 September 1916; joined 1st Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, in the field, 12 October 1916, and relinquished appointment as Temporary Corporal.

Wounded in action action, 3 November 1916 (gun shot wound, left side), and admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance; transferred to NZ Divisional Rest Station, 6 November 1916; to No 1 Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 14 November 1916; discharged to unit, 30 November 1916; rejoined unit, 1 December 1916.

Tried by Field General Court Martial, 16 December 1916, of charge of wound being self-inflicted; found 'Not Guilty': 'Wound was not self-inflicted but was caused through soldier's disobedience of Orders to take cover.'

Admitted to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance, 8 April 1917 (measles), and transferred to 53rd Casualty Clearing Station, and then to No 7 General Hospital, St Omer; rejoined Bn, in the field, 20 April 1917.

Appointed Lance Corporal, 23 April 1917.

Detached to Grenade School, 6 May 1917; rejoined Bn, in the field, 14 May 1917.

Appointed Temporary Corporal, 12 June 1917.
