Embarked Wellington, 19 August 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 25 October 1916, and marched into Sling Camp, and reverted to Temporary Corporal.

Proceeded overseas to France, 15 November 1916; joined 4th Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, 4 December 1916, and posted to D Company.

Detached to Pigeon Course, 3 May 1917; rejoined Bn, 6 May 1917.

Appointed Lance Corporal, 11 May 1917.

Wounded in action, 14 June 1917, and admitted to 9th Australian Field Ambulance; transferred to 12th Australian Field Ambulance, 15 June 1917; rejoined unit, 23 June 1917.
