'At Gravenstafel east of Ypres on 4th October, 1917. For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty. He was a company runner and throughout the whole operations showed himself as a man of great resource being able to give much valuable information, both of our own troops and occasionally of the enemy. When holding the advanced line until the zero hour, when we were under shell fire from the enemy for 12 hours almost with cessation, this man did splendid work and set a very fine example to the man. His work has been done under highly dangerous and trying conditions and it was invariably done well. He has previously done very fine work in other sectors.'
