Embarked to join the British Expeditionary Force, France, 6 April 1916. Admitted to hospital, in the field, 30 June 1916; rejoined unit from hospital, 2 July 1916. Admitted to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance, 16 November 1916 (diarrhoea); rejoined unit, 26 November 1916. Appointed Lance Corporal, 21 December 1916. Admitted to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, 3 February 1917 (on leave from France; bronchial catarrh); discharged from hospital, 14 February 1917; rejoined unit in France, 18 February 1917. Promoted Corporal, 18 April 1917. Detached to Divisional Reinforcements Camp, 30 May 1917; rejoined unit, 18 June 1917.
