Military Cross 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This officer was second in command of the centre company in the line of advanced posts when the preliminary bombardment commenced. Anticipating an attack he went from post to post, seeing that all were prepared. This work entailed great personal danger, and his example influenced the men all along the line. At each post he took part in the work of the garrison, with rifle, Lewis gun, or bomb, and at once he led a bombing party forward, countering an enemy rush.'
