Bar to Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry in the field. East of St Julien on the 4th October this man took charge of his section, upon his section Commander being casualties. He led them forward with the utmost determination and bravery. On encountering one particular strong point, he attacked it single handed and bayoneted the whole of the occupants which numbered about 8. He showed himself possessed of initiative, courage and excellent leadership. Subsequently until the Battalion was relieved in the line, he rendered valuable assistance in consolidating and holding our position voluntary undertaking any work that involved risk to his Section. His conduct throughout was of the highest standard. He is already a possessor of the "Military Medal".'
