'Near Passchendaele on 12th October, 1917. For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty. He reconnoitred the enemy's position when his section's guns were held up, and located three enemy machine guns and several snipers. It was due to his excellent work that his section was able to bring a gun into action. With his gun, hostile machine guns were silenced and the snipers were forced to keep down.'
