War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington, 16 July 1917; disembarked Liverpool, england, 16 September 1917, and marched in to 4th Reserve Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, Sling Camp. Proceeded overseas to France, 26 October 1917. Admitted to 4th Stationary Hospital, Etaples, 15 November 1917 (measles, mild); discharged to No 6 Convalescent Depot, Etaples, 30 November 1917; transferred to Base Depot, 7 January 1918. Joined 1st Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, in the field, and posted to 8th Company, 26 January 1918. Detached to Divisional Lewis Gun School, 19 May 1918; rejoined Bn, in the field, 7 June 1918. Wounded in action, 17 August 1918 (gun shot wound, back, penetrating); admitted to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance, 18 August 1918, and transferred same day to 29th Casualty Clearing Station ('dangerously ill', multiple wounds).
