War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington, 26 April 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 20 July 1917, and marched in to Sling Camp. Marched out to Machine Gun Depot, Grantham, 8 August 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 19 October 1917; posted to strength, No 4 Company, NZ Machine Gun Corps, in the field, 28 October 1917. Wounded in action, 24 November 1917; oroginally listed as 'remained at duty'; subsequently recorded as admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance, and transferred to No 3 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station, 25 November 1917 (gun shot wound, face); transferred to No 3 Canadian General Hospital, Boulogne, 2 December 1917. Instance noted, 15 December 1917, of meritorious/gallant conduct: Voluntarily acted as a donor for blood transfusion with the object of saving the life of a comrade. Transferred to England, 5 December 1917, and admitted to Military Hospital, Endell Street, London; transferred to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 11 December 1917; discharged on furlough, 27 March 1918, to report to NZ Convalescent Depot, Codford, 11 April 1918.
