War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington on board 'Ulimaroa', 26 July 1917; disembarked Plymouth, England, 24 September 1917, and posted to 5th Reserve Bn, 27 September 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 23 October 1917; joined B Company, 4th Bn, New Zealand rifle Brigade, in the field, 27 November 1917. Detached to Divisional School, 17 May 1918; rejoined unit from detachment, 7 June 1918. Wounded in action, 31 August 1918 (gun shot wound, right hand); admitted to 11th Stationary Hospital, 29 August 1918; transferred to 1st NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, England, 31 August 1918; to NZ Convalescent hospital, Hornchurch, 4 October 1918. Diagnosed with pneumonia, 11 November 1918 (placed on 'seriously ill' list); removed from 'seriously ill' list, 24 November 1918. Commenced return to New Zealand on board HT 'Zealandic', 18 January 1919; discharged (no longer physically fit for war service on account of wounds received in action), 28 March 1919.
