Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On 12th October 1917, during an attack on Passchendaele Ridge, Staff Sergeant A M Johnstone repeatedly went forward with his squads to the regimental aid posts. All the time he had to plough through mud up to the knees making progress slow and being under machine-gun fire and snipers at the same time. He brought back many wounded and his determination bravery and coolness under trying and dangerous conditions was a splendid example to his men.'
