Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George

'For devotion to duty since the outbreak of the War, as C.R.A. of the Division. He has organised trained and fought the Divisional Artillery in all operations undertaken by the Division on the Gallipoli Peninsula, and in France. The efficiency of the Divisional Artillery in every respect is entirely due to the zeal and ability displayed by this Officer. His personal influence alone has inspired all ranks under his command in that spirit which is so conducive to efficiency. I cannot too strongly recommend this Officer for reward, not only for the services he himself has rendered, but for the valuable services rendered by the Divisional Artillery to the Army.'

Mention in Despatches

'Brig-General Johnston is responsible for the re-organisation of the Divisional Artillery which has expanded from 6 to 15 Batteries since the 1st March last. In this work he has shown conspicuous ability and it is owing to him that the Artillery has attained a good standard. His work during the summer at Armentieres was excellent, and during the operation on the Somme from 13th September till General Sandys returned from Hospital at the end of the month Brig-General Johnston commanded the Artillery supporting the Division with distinction. I consider him an officer of very outstanding ability and confidently recommend him for a higher rank as being in the interests of the service.'
