'At Flers on the 16th September and the two following days this man noted as Company Runner, carrying many messages back from the Front Line to Battalion Headquarters in Flers. This was a distance of nearly half a mile over country continuously under heavy shell and machine-gun fire. Between two hundred and three hundred yards of this distance the ground was in view of the enemy and this man was sniped at deliberately. He showed great courage and determination in getting messages through.'
