Proceeded overseas to France, 6 July 1917; joined 2nd Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, and posted to A Company, 15 August 1917.

Wounded in action, 12-13 October 1917 (gun shot wound, left leg), and admitted to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance; transferred to 23rd General Hospital, Boulogne, 14 October 1917; to England, 21 October 1917, and admitted to 2nd London General Hospital, Chelsea; transferred to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, 9 January 1918; to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 1 February 1918.

Classified 'unfit' by Medical Board, 16 February 1918, and placed on NZ Roll.

Commenced return to New Zealand from Glasgow on board HMNZT 'Athenic', 1 April 1918; discharged (medically unfit), 8 July 1918.
