'For gallantry and consistent devotion to duty. From 22/9/17 to 24/2/18 he has commanded a Platoon with unfailing energy and enthusiasm. He led his Platoon in action on the 4th October, 1917, near Gravenstafel with splendid determination, and displayed fine powers of leadership and initiative, while his utter disregard of danger and untiring energy were a great source of inspiration to his men, both in the attack and during consolidation. He has, in previous actions, been noted for extremely good work and high personal courage.'
