Military Medal 'During an intense bombardment by the enemy lasting from 10pm on night of 28th July until 5.30am on the morning of the 29th, this NCO showed conspicuous bravery while acting as a platoon Commander. During the whole time he patrolled the support line and absolutely regardless of his own safety kept his men away from the worst places in the trench, and saw that they distributed themselves along those partitions that were safest. His energetic actions undoubtedly saved many lives and his cool bearing set a fine example to the men. He constantly worked the sentries at their posts and arranged for new posts when some were blown out. He organised a raid repelling party for the front line and was of the greatest possible assistance throughout to his Company Commander.'

He was conspicuous during the enemy?s attempted raid on our trenches on the 28th February 1917, setting an example of high courage to his men. His work has always been good and he can always be thoroughly relied on when in a tight corner.'
