Croix de Guerre (Belgium) 'For gallantry in action and consistent good work near Gouzeaucourt. On the night of 9th/10th September 1918, a party of the enemy attempted to raid Sergt Hyland's post. The night was pitch dark and the enemy had the advantage of surprise. With great coolness Sergt Hyland collected his men and led them against the enemy attack, killing one of the enemy and completely re-establishing this post. But for his promptness the ground would undoubtedly been lost. Sergt Hyland?s work has been of a consistently high character.'
