'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the night 24th/25th August 1918, during active operations near Biefvillers, this runner repeatedly went out under very heavy enemy machine-gun and artillery fire and carried important despatches from the Brigade Forward Report Centre to the Headquarters of Battalions in the line. On the succeeding days he also displayed untiring zeal and undaunted courage in continuing this important work, and although badly shaken he still continued and was instrumental in maintaining communication between the Battalions and his Brigade Headquarters at a time when it was of the utmost urgency. His untiring devotion to duty and his dogged perseverance under such adverse circumstances were a fine example to all with whom he came in contact and inspired the greatest confidence in his comrades.'
