'On the morning of 22nd August 1918 near Puisieux. Whilst a number of wagons were unloading ammunition at the battery position, the area was heavily barraged by the enemy. By his quickness and energy this NCO helped materially in getting the teams away without casualties. Later in the evening when the main Puisieux Achiet le Petit Road was being heavily barraged, a block occurred on the road, and many casualties were inflicted. Sergeant Hutchings took charge and organised the traffic, quickly having the road cleared, thereby saving many casualties.'
