Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the 12th September 1918 near Gouzeaucourt when all but the Sergeant of his subsection were rendered casualties, though wounded he kept his gun in action, against determined bombing attacks until his flank exposed. With the aid of his wounded Sergeant, he then withdrew his gun, belts, spare parts and tripod, and came into action again in an alternative position, remaining with it until relieved. His steadfast courage and coolness during trying circumstances showed a very fine example and spirit.'
