Military Medal 'Operations during Somme advance 22 August-12 September 1918. For gallantry in action. Had control of a Lewis gun in the attack on Mametz on 26 August 1918 and being unable to use his gun effectually from cover, rushed out and into the open amid a hot enemy fire from concealed posts and still being unable to fire from the gun rest, placed the gun on his knee and served it with splendid effect, causing many casualties and the withdrawal of the enemy post and so enabling the infantry to proceed. On other occasions during the same day's fighting and later whilst on patrol this soldier showed dash, initiative and bravery.'
