'Sgt Howlett has displayed the utmost coolness under fire during the operations round Flers. On 18/9/16 while the Company was moving forward across Switch Trench and had become partly disorganised by the enemy?s Barrage Sgt Howlett was left to reorganise the company so they entered a communication trench. This he did admirably. On the night of 17/18 September, he went out in charge of a Patrol from Grove Alley which he handled well. On 25/9/16 during the attack on Factory Corner he handled his section well and was of great assistance during the consolidation. On 26/9/16 he took forward an advance post towards Trench but was wounded in his efforts to get forward. Throughout the whole time from 16/9/16 to 26/9/16 he has done exceptionally good work and shown great devotion to duty.'
