'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the 8th October 1918 in the advance on the Masnieres line and German positions in rear of it, this NCO commanded a rifle section which he handled throughout with marked dash and ability. Towards the end of the attack he found himself opposite a machine-gun in a strong position. He brought rifle fire to bear as a first measure, but on this proving ineffective he took one man with him and crawled to a flank with hand grenades. He threw these and rushing up under cover of their burst assaulted the crew of the gun and captured it. He then found himself looking down into the Sunken Road which was the final objective, and which was full of the enemy. Without hesitating a moment he with his one companion rushed down the bank and thus turned the left flank. His action was largely responsible for the capture of the objective, the right flank having been turned at the same time.'
