Military Medal 'This NCO has been in charge of the operations on forward tram lines from St. Quentin to Boyle's Farm and Gooseberry Farm during the Messines Offensive and for some weeks previously. Large quantities had to be transported to the line by this tramway, although the tramline had been blown up by shell fire more than fifty times, sometimes before the working parties, sometimes behind them. Lance Sergeant Holmes has never failed to get the material through. His example of courage and fortitude has been of the highest order and was of the greatest value to the men.'
