Military Medal

'Operations in front of Bapaume on August 29th and 30th 1918. For gallantry and devotion to duty. On 30th August this soldier was on duty in the forward post when a shell exploded killing several men, wounding others and knocking Heekin down. He immediately set about dressing the wounded in spite of the heavy fire and his dazed condition. He obtained help, carried the wounded to safety and on returning formed a new stretcher squad and carried out wounded for 24 hours without rest or food. His coolness and bravery under this heavy machine gun and shellfire was a magnificent example to the other bearers and helped greatly in the rescue of wounded men from the most advanced position.'
