Military Medal 'Operations East and West of Bapaume - 25th August to 6th September 1918. During the operations east of Metz, this N.C.O. was in charge of a patrol to reconnoitre Gouzeaucourt Wood. This was a particularly hazardous operation as the position was at that time obscure and was thought to be strongly held by the enemy. He succeeded in getting through the Wood in spite of opposition in which the patrol sustained 2 casualties. By cool and skilful leadership he brought his patrol back to our lines having gained valuable information s to enemy's dispositions. Lance Corporal Hearn has done consistently good work over a period of 8 or 9 months.'
