Mention in Despatches 'For devotion to duty. This Officer has always shown great devotion to duty and during operations on Messines Ridge and at La Basse Ville rendered invaluable services. It was largely due to his excellent work at the former operations that all guns were kept in good repair, and had at all times a full reserve of ammunition.' Awarded, and promulgated, 'London Gazette', 28 December 1917. |

Military Cross 'For consistent devotion to duty and gallantry in action. During the period under review, Capt. Hayter on several occasions most ably commanded the 1st N.Z. Machine Gun Coy. In the operations east of Ypres on 4th October, the success achieved by this Brigade, was a no small measure due to the gallantry and inititative of this Officer. Later when the Brigade was holding the line in front of Belle vue Spur, Capt. Hayter again commanded the 1st N.Z. Machine Gun Coy with skill, and maintained a most cheerful amongst his men, despite adverse conditions. On other occasions when performing the duties of 2nd in Command of his Company, he showed himself to be a most conscientious worker.'
