'For gallant conduct and devotion to duty throughout operations near Gravenstafel 4th to 8th October 1917. He repeatedly led his transport through heavy enemy shell fire along difficult and dangerous roads and delivered ammunition and supplies to his Battalion. He has acted for two years as Transport Sergeant and during that period his unfailing energy and resourcefulness has materially contributed to the efficiency of the transport of his Battalion.'
