Joined Auckland Infantry Regiment at Gallipoli, 8 August 1915, and reverted to the ranks.

Admitted to HS 'Ionian', Gallipoli, 29 August 1915 (enteritis and septic knee); transferred to St Patrick's Hospital, Malta, 1 September 1915. Discharged to Egypt, and attached to NZ Base Depot, Ghezireh, 13 December 1915. Rejoined Auckland Infantry Regiment, Ismailia, 18 January 1916.

Embarked Port Said to join the British Expeditionary Force, France, 6 April 1916.

Marched out to Paris Review, 11 July 1916; rejoined unit, in the field, 18 July 1916.

Appointed Lance Corporal, 15 October 1916.
