Military Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the attack on Beaumont Hamel on 26th March 1918, Corporal Harper was in command of a Lewis gun and team. Under heavy machine-gun fire, this NCO pushed forward his gun and engaged an enemy machine-gun and silenced it, thus enabling his platoon to push forward. Later on, he also covered by fire the further advance of his platoon. Throughout the whole attack he showed great initiative and dash. His coolness and good leadership were magnificent, and by his masterly handling of his gun he undoubtedly assisted the advance and also saved casualties.'
