Proceeded overseas to France, 9 December 1916; joined 2nd Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, 7 January 1917, and posted to C Company.

Admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance, 27 January 1917 (trench feet); transferred to 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 6 February 1917; to No 3 Canadian General Hospital, Boulogne, 8 February 1917 (frost bite, right foot); to England, 10 February 1917, and admitted to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, 11 February 1917; transferred to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 5 March 1917; to NZ Command Depot, Codford, 27 April 1917.

Proceeded overseas to France, 6 July 1917; rejoined Bn, in the field, 9 August 1917, and posted to B Company.
