Embarked Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force (Gallipoli campaign), 12 April 1915.

Admitted to HS 'Dongala' 2 May 1915 (dysentery); transferred to HS 'Latitia', Alexandria, 7 May 1915; admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital, Edgbaston, Birmingham, 20 May 1915 (severe dysentery); discharged to Monte Video Camp, Weymouth, 1 July 1915.

Found guilty, 21 March 1916, of being absent without leave from 9.15 am, 14 March, till Tattoo, 16 March 1916: forfeited 3 days' pay under Royal warrant.

Proceeded overseas to France, and marched into Base Depot, Etaples, 30 April 1916.

Joined 2nd Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, in the field, 25 May 1916, and posted to 10th Company.

Wounded in action, 10 July 1916 (gun shot wound, right hand), and admitted to No 2 NZ Field Ambulance; discharged to unit, 10 July 1916.

Admitted to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance, 7 April 1917 (mumps); rejoined Bn, in the field, 22 April 1917.

On leave to United Kingdom, 23 July 1917; rejoined Bn from leave, 6 August 1917.
