Military Medal

'For great initiative and bravery. This NCO was in charge of a Lewis gun Section of his Company in its successful operations against La Basse Ville on 31st July. After the Company had apparently cleared up the village a machine-gun opened fire in a building in the Northern end of the village. Against this post this NCO led his section, captured it and destroyed the crew; then taking the enemy machine-gun forward of his Company front line Hannan brought it into action against the fleeing enemy. The initiative and leadership he displayed were of the highest standard.'
