'Switch Trench, 15th September 1916 (South east of High Wood.) This NCO displayed great bravery during the advance and exceptional coolness and initiative throughout the day, 15th September, filling the place of Senior NCOs who became casualties, with conspicuous ability. Lance Corporal Halpin, though wounded, refused to go to hospital until the following day.'
