Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. All the officers of his company became casualties, and he was the only sergeant left. He at once took command,
and under very heavy machine gun fire made repeated efforts to capture some enemy strong points, but was held up by uncut wire. He displayed the finest
qualities of leadership and initiative.'
