'At Flers on the 16th September and the two following days this officer, who is one of the Subalterns of the Hawke's Bay Company, rendered this company commander and the battalion most valuable assistance. The enemy made a counter attack just before the time for our advance, and this company had to advance through a heavy barrage. The Company was unsupported on the right and had to hold the ground won, under difficult circumstances. The other subalterns of the company were killed very early in the day, and this officer's services were of great value. At Gallipoli and since the Battalion came to France he has marked capability and courage.'
