Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the operations in front of Havrincourt Wood between 12th and 14th September 1918 Bombardier Guthrie was attached to Headquarters 1st New Zealand Infantry Brigade. On the night of 12th/13th September when grenades and ammunition were running short this NCO reconnoitred routes to advanced Brigade Dump under heavy shell fire, returning he led up his ammunition wagons in darkness and under heavy shell fire, successfully delivering everything. Again during daytime on 18th and on night of 13th/14th he took forward ammunition under heavy shell fire. He showed the greatest resource and bravery in bringing up his wagons and it was largely owing to his excellent work in getting forward supplies of ammunition at a critical period that the battalions in the line were able to beat off several determined counter-attacks.'
