'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the field, in the Bapaume area during the period from 24th August to 14th September 1918. This NCO has acted as a platoon commander during the above period with exceptional skill and courage. From 30th August to 1st September, especially, he excelled himself in handling and holding together his platoon during two attacks and a counter attack by hostile tanks. His skill and coolness inspired his men with confidence and his personal bravery was of a high order and materially assisted in the success of the operations. He has shown himself repeatedly to be a leader possessed of determination combined with a high conception of his duties.'
