Military Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the operations near Bapaume on the 24th August 1918, Sergeant Napier's platoon was in a forward position. Part of his Lewis gun team had been killed leaving him very short of ammunition. One of his men endeavoured to collect some of the panniers from men who had been killed, but was wounded in the attempt and lay in a very exposed position. Sergeant Napier at once jumped out of the trench and in spite of heavy machine gun fire succeeded in bringing in the wounded man. He again went over the top, collected the Lewis gun panniers, and brought them into the trench. By his action the gunners were, later on, able to disperse a party of the enemy who were assembling for the attack.'
